Ministry and Mission Training

The Birmingham First Seventh-day Adventist Church welcomes you to our first Officer Training Workshop and Ministry Fair: Mission Focused Ministry.

As the title suggests, our objective is to make a meaningful contribution to the training and equipping process of local church officers, ministry leaders and anyone who may feel called to serve God.

In the book of Ephesians chapter 4:12,13 we are told that after our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ascended to heaven, he bestowed a variety of gifts upon His followers for:

12 The equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,  13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;”

Ephesians chapter 4:12,13

This passage makes clear that Jesus intended that all of His followers were to be trained and equipped for service. It also makes it clear that this work of equipping members for ministry was to continue until all His followers become united in faith and the knowledge of The Son of God, also until we become fully mature as measured by the standard of Christ’s character. Not only does this passage emphasize the prime importance of this work, but it also implies that this work of training and “equipping of the saints for the work of ministry,” is to continue until the close of probation because it is an essential part of the discipleship process.

Joe Kidder states on page 54 of his book The Big Four that:

“A growing church is not a one-person show. Church growth is not about what the pastor does—its about what the members do.”
Joe Kidder, The Big Four. P. 54

He explains that research shows that the fastest growing Seventh-day Adventist congregations in North America spend a great deal of time, resources and money in training and equipping their members.

As Seventh-day Adventists we long for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that this will not occur until the Gospel of The Kingdom is preached throughout the world. Matthew 24:14. Hence the reason for Mission Focused Ministry. It is our belief that trained and equipped members are more inclined to serve God. When every member embraces the fact that at the core of every ministry lies the Mission of God, to restore His image in all people, then we will have moved from the position of just “looking for” to the position of “hastening the coming of the day of God.” 2 Peter 3:12.
